Zap eSIM vs Red Pocket: which US eSIM fits you?

Red Pocket and Zap eSIM both get you mobile data in the US on an eSIM, but they are different kinds of service. Red Pocket sells month-to-month phone plans with unlimited talk and text plus a data allowance. Zap eSIM sells one-off prepaid data plans (1, 3, 5 or 10 GB, or Unlimited for 7 days) that you pay for with Bitcoin over the Lightning Network, with no account needed and no KYC.

Here is how they compare, using only what each company publishes on its own website.

What the numbers mean

At 3 GB, Zap eSIM is $8.49 for a one-off 30-day data plan, against Red Pocket's $10/month Essentials plan (Red Pocket showed 50% off the first month on October 4, 2026). But they buy different things. Red Pocket's Essentials is a monthly phone plan with unlimited talk and text, and taxes and fees may apply at checkout (see Red Pocket's terms). Zap eSIM's 3 GB plan is data only, for 30 days.

If you only need a little data, Zap eSIM's 1 GB plan costs $0.90 for 7 days. If you need a lot of data every month, Red Pocket's Plus plan (20 GB for $20/month) costs less per GB than any Zap eSIM GB plan (Zap eSIM's 10 GB plan works out at $2.00 per GB). Zap eSIM's Unlimited plan ($17.99 for 7 days) gives you the first 2 GB each day at full speed, then up to 1 Mbps.

Who should pick which

  • Pick Red Pocket if you want a main phone line: a phone number (or keep your current one), unlimited talk and text, a monthly plan, a choice of network, or international calling and roaming. It's also the better value for heavy monthly data use.
  • Pick Zap eSIM if you want US data without signing up: no account needed, no KYC, pay a Lightning invoice, and your eSIM appears on your order page straight away. Good for a short trip, a backup line, or a one-off need.

A private, secure connection, explained plainly: the private part is the checkout. You don't need an account or ID, and you pay with Bitcoin over Lightning instead of a card. The secure part is the standard encryption mobile networks use on the link between your phone and the network. It isn't a VPN and doesn't hide your activity from the mobile network. Frequently asked questions

Is Zap eSIM cheaper than Red Pocket?

It depends on what you need. At 3 GB, Zap eSIM is $8.49 for a one-off 30-day data plan; Red Pocket's Essentials is $10 per month with unlimited talk and text, and taxes and fees may apply at checkout (see Red Pocket's terms). Zap eSIM's smallest plan is 1 GB for $0.90 (7 days). For heavy monthly data use, Red Pocket's 20 GB Plus plan ($20/month) is cheaper per GB. Red Pocket's Premium plan ($30/month, unlimited data with 50 GB of premium data) is a monthly phone plan, so it isn't like-for-like with Zap eSIM's 7-day Unlimited ($17.99). Prices checked October 4, 2026.

Which is better as my main phone plan?

Red Pocket. It's a phone service with unlimited talk and text, and you can keep your number. Zap eSIM sells prepaid data plans with no phone number.

Do I need an account to buy a Zap eSIM?

No. You don't need an account and there's no KYC. You pay a Lightning invoice and your eSIM is delivered instantly on your order page. Save that page's link: it's your receipt and how you top up. An account is optional if you want to keep your eSIMs in one place.

Is my connection private and secure?

Checkout is private: no account, no ID (no KYC), no email needed, and you pay with Bitcoin over Lightning instead of a card. Bitcoin payments aren't anonymous, but you don't hand over a name, card or ID to buy. The connection is a normal mobile data connection: traffic between your phone and the mobile network is encrypted as standard. It isn't a VPN or end-to-end encryption, and the mobile network still carries your traffic and can see connection details. For extra privacy online, use a VPN or encrypted apps on top. See our privacy policy for what we do collect.

How do I pay for Zap eSIM?

With Bitcoin over the Lightning Network, from any Lightning wallet. Prices are set in US dollars and charged in sats. More: how paying with Bitcoin works.
